Coffee and Curriculum Series ~ Six Talks with Mr. Lee & Friends: Pinnacle Peak Elementary School would like to invite you to this informative series of conversations to be led by Mr. Lee on a variety of educational topics and how they impact our school. These town-hall style discussions will be loosely structured around the designated topics, but will provide opportunities for questioning and those famous “teachable moments!” Further, dialogue generated from this series will help to shape a second round of talks to be coming in the future. Although attendance is encouraged, each session will be recorded and posted online. However, the coffee and treats provided by our PTO will only be available to those who are present! FROM THE HEALTH CENTER~Nurse Val: The health center is in need of packages of new underwear sizes 5-8 for girls and boys.
Human Growth and Development Program:
4th and 5th Grade Girls: Tuesday, April 26th from 6:30-7:30p.m. in the PPES Media Center. This special meeting will include discussions about the physical changes of growing up and the emotional changes that girls experience as they reach adolesence. Our school nurse, Valerie Hinds, will use this new format to present the health program, which provides accurate, factual information, and is scientific in nature. This evening meeting will create an atmosphere of open communication with you and your daughter. This takes the place of the previosly held tutorial, which was scheduled during the school day for the 4th and 5th grade girls. Please return to your daughter's classroom teacher by Monday, April 11, 2011.
5th Grade Boys: Thursday, April 21st at 2:20pm. This program deals with the physical changes of puberty and the emotional changes that boys and girls experience as they reach adolescence. It provides accurate, factual information. It is also health oriented and scientific in nature. Signed permission slips are due by Friday, April 8th. No child will be allowed to participate in this class without written permission.
6th Grade Boys and Girls: Monday, May 2nd - Friday, May 5th during the last two hours of each school day. The Human Growth and Development program presentations for boys and girls are taught separately. The boys will have an hour for their lesson and the girls will have the following hour, or vice versa. Students not taking the HGD program, or any student not returning a signed permission slip, or any student that misses both Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 of the Program, will attend an alternative learning experience. P.E.~Coach Mang: Summer school is right around the corner! If you are considering having your child attend summer school at Pinnacle Peak, I’d like to invite you to sign him or her up for “Sports Bonanza”. This class will be held indoors and focuses on team sport skills, sportsmanship, teamwork, and also individual sports. Register soon because this class tends to fill up pretty quickly. District Field Day was held on Friday, March 18 at North Canyon High School. Select 4th, 5th, and 6th graders from Pinnacle Peak attended and faired very well. SUMMER SCHOOL~Mr. Hicks: Summer Soaring at the Peak- Hurry, Classes are filling fast! Join us at PPES for a summer of fun and academics. There are a variety of classes offered for all age groups and interest levels. Spend your summer becoming a better reader, writer, dancer or scientist. Be a part of the Summer Soaring team. Become a Jr. Vet, live the life of Harry Potter, or learn to create with needle and thread or clay. Spend your time revving up with the some great sports activities, or learn the discipline of yoga. Some items we are currently in need of: Boxes of tissues, small 4 ounce disposable cups, water bottles, chewable benadryl, chewable tylenol jr., chewable ibuprofen jr., disposable disinfectant surface wipes, and disposable nonscented baby wipes, new (inexpensive) boys and girls underpants (especially small and medium sizes).
Fifth and sixth grade students who are age 11 are due for their D-tap and Meningitis immunizations. Please be sure to send the proof of immunization to the health office, call me if there you have any questions regarding your student's immunizations.
Please remember that all medications for your student have to be kept in the health office and a consent form needs to be signed by the parent. A signed note can be accepted when a medication is initially sent to school with a student and I will send the consent form home for a signature to be returned the following day.
Another reminder that students are not allowed to return to school after illness until they have been fever free for 24 hrs without the use of tylenol or ibuprofen products.
To all those Moms and Dads who help out and volunteer to supervise the students, keeping them safe, on the playground during lunch recess - a big THANK YOU!!!! I appreciate you so much!

TECHNOLOGY~Ms. Sorin: From the tech lab... Thank you to all of our wonderful PPES families. Your thoughtful donations to the Specialist teacher gift fund are truly appreciated. We are so lucky to have a community that is so supportive in so many ways throughout the school year.
All of our students have been working so hard in Technology classes this year. Our 5th and 6th graders have completed their research and are starting the creative portions of their projects. If students choose to video tape their projects at home, they may either bring in the recording device (with the cables) to upload to our computers or they may save the file as a Quicktime file and bring in the raw footage on a CD. No editing of the video may be done at home. Also, please be aware that the school cannot be responsible for personal devices that are brought to school. Students have been told that they need parent permission to bring personal equipment to school.
Third and fourth grade students will be working on creating slideshows, websites and podcasts. Websites and podcasts will not be published to the world, but can be viewed within the PVUSD pvlearners system.
Students in our k-3 classes will continue developing the skills needed to work with publishing and multi-media software. These skills are the building blocks needed to communicate electronically and collaboratively in later work.

ART~Mrs. Kohl: Our Pinnacle Peak Artists' works are now on display at the PVUSD Transportation Department in the upstairs lobby. The theme of the show is "School Transportation in the Future." The childrens' ideas of how to get to school in 2025 are both creative and imaginative. The transportation department is located at 20621 N. 32nd Street, Phoenix. The following ia a list of students that have art on display: Keila Orona, Anders Olson, Max Franco, Lauran Montell, Connor Williamson, Jonathon Burke, Samantha Rhodes, Michael Caifa, Alexa Hooper, Donald Caviness, Ryann Schidler, Ella Gragg, Sydney Smith, Jordan Black, Ken Riedersma, Spencer Gerstner, Morgan Rucker, Samantha Wetherell, Lauren Neill, Sofia Garber, Anthony Corgiat, Reese Johnson, Ashley Cramer, Allison Kwan, and Maria Tangalos. The art will return to PPES on December 16th, 2010. All students with entries will receive ribbons for their accomplishments.
A huge thank you to all the parents and students that have donated art supplies to the art program. A list is outside the art room with a few additional suggestions. We are looking for 3-5 parents to donate 301-tax credit funds to the art program in order to cover costs for supplies and classes to be held before school for Arabian Horse Show drawings and the Arizona Junior Federal Duck Stamp Design Contest.
Taylor Forbeck, a 6th grade student from last year, won the state art contest. She received her award in October from the Arizona Fish and Game Comissioner. The state presented our school with a copy of Taylor's design and stamp. Please come and view her design which is located across from the art room. Olivia Raiff's design from two years ago is also on display. Our students know their ducks and are great artists. This new award was initiated two years ago, only one in the United States for K-6 grade students, and PPES won both years. Of the 4,000 stamps printed in the state 500 are of student design and are sold out early. Thank you again for all the support to the art program.
MUSIC~Mrs. Zollars: JOIN THE PINNACLE PEAK CHOIR: Choral participation for children in grades four through six provides the opportunity for experiences in the skills of vocal production, music reading and interpretation. Students also experience enhancement of poise, posture and body coordination. Choral music has intrinsic value in itself and provides enjoyment to any participator or listener. Be challenged, have fun, and perform!!
REHEARSAL DAYS AND TIMES: Fourth grade students rehearse on Mondays before school from 8:15 to 9:00. STARTING September 13th.

LIBRARY~Mrs. Rosky: A special thank you to the PTO for a successful book fair. Due to the hard work and dedication of the parent volunteers and supportive parents, the library now has many new books on the shelves.
Barnes and Noble Night was another success story. We were fortunate to have Mr.Lee reading Skippy John Jones and have Mark Trombino autograph his book. Due to the turnout and books purchased, we were able to add more books to our library.
Congratulations to Mrs. Lindley's class and Mrs. Engels's class for being the Golden Book Award winners. Mrs. Lindley's class celebrated with a Tasti D-Lite Party and Mrs. Engels class received book marks. Good Job!
We are still looking for volunteers to help in the library. Please contact Mrs. Haney to schedule.
